Raising Successful Kids: Celebrate the Process of Winning

As humans, we tend to want the results right away. When we’re working on something, we’re always eager for the outcome. And because of this, we tend to forget about the process. We forget about the experience of getting that outcome.

This also holds true in the family.

We always want to be somewhere doing something. We want our kids to be always doing something because as parents, we want them to accomplish as much as they can — which is great, but we should teach them to value the process they go through so that they will appreciate their results even more.

One of our children is a six-year-old boy and he is such a learner. He has always been curious about things and with the help of today’s technology, he has been learning non-stop. He always strives to be better. We, as his parents, are very proud of his eagerness to learn, but we’re very careful because sometimes he gets too competitive and gets angry when he doesn’t get the results he was aiming for.

So we tell him to slow down. We remind him to pause from time to time and enjoy the process of learning, and that learning isn’t race. We tell him that he’s doing a great job. We don’t forget to let him feel that even though he fails at times, he can always get back up and start again. We always tell him that the failures he experienced are part of his growth and it’s a way to make him better.

But aside from enjoying the process, we also teach our children to celebrate their wins — big or small. No matter what it is, as long as they’re making progress, it is a win and should be celebrated. We try to make them understand that although getting the outcome they aimed for is great, the growth and development that they experienced while working for that goal is even more important.
